When a Langwarrin man shoved his hand into a drawer looking for his footy socks, he grabbed more than he bargained for when he closed his fist around a red-bellied black snake.

Imagine heading to footy training on a typical Monday evening and reaching into your sock drawer, only to find it’s now home to a scaly friend.
Langwarrin resident Craig Milward felt around in his sock drawer and instead of picking out his footy socks, he picked up the body of a 1.2 metre red-bellied black snake.
“I was talking to my wife, I reached in and I felt this thing move through my hand,” Mr Milward said.
“I went to grab a pair of socks and I actually grabbed the snake instead.
“I stepped back quite quickly and I as I looked at it you could see the tail crawl under the drawer.”
Mr Milward and his wife Rachael called Barry Goldsmith from Snake Catcher Victoria who was able to evict the new resident.
“It was an easy snake to catch,” Mr Goldsmith said.
“It’s a first time for me to see a snake in a sock drawer; you would usually find them in underwear drawer but never in a sock drawer.”
Mr Goldsmith believes that snakes gravitate close to houses in the Langwarrin area because they are built near wetlands.

“The snakes have always been there and more houses going up means they have started to move in,” Mr Goldsmith said.
“The snakes are being pushed out of their habitats and into their lounge rooms and backyards.”
It’s believed the snake found its way in through a tiny hole in the resident’s flyscreen door.
“Just keep the doors shut and make sure they are in good condition,” Mr Goldsmith said.
