A man was covered in blood after a harrowing attack on a Melbourne tram, leaving commuters horrified.
The terrifying scene unfolded on the Route 11 tram in Fitzroy North about 5pm.
Three youths approached another two when the tram came to a stop at the Brunswick St and Alexandra Parade intersection.
“It is understood the trio made demands for clothes from the victims before a physical altercation ensued,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.
Crowds of people and police gathered at the intersection after the assault.
One witness described it as a “vicious attack” before they were taken away by the police to give a statement.
Another witness said a group of three teens assaulted another teen because they wanted his cap.
The victim was left “covered in blood” from the assault and “his nose appeared broken”.
One of the victims suffered an injury and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Police said the offending youths fled the scene empty-handed in a silver hatchback.
The investigation remains ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
