Malmsbury locals pay respect to the goose step

WHY did a gaggle of geese cross the road? Apparently, to have a gander at what’s on the other side, in their home town of Malmsbury.

Malmsbury, 96km northwest of Melbourne, comes to a stop twice a day to allow geese to cross the road.

Malmsbury General Store and Post Office worker Brooke Lee said local drivers refrain from tooting, rather treating the geese like town pets.

“They spend their days walking down the main street; everyone knows them,” she said.

“At about 4pm most nights the lollipop lady generally helps them cross back over to the park.

“Police even blocked off the road one day to help them get across.”

The gaggle of about a dozen calls the Malmsbury Botanical Gardens home.

Gina Goldsmith, who owns local Mediterranean restaurant The Stables, said they send stunned tourists on a wild-goose chase.

“People love exploring the town to find and feed the geese,” she said. “They belong to Malmsbury and we all look out.”
