Lucy Bradlow and Bronwen Bock launch Better Together party

Two friends who want to job-share have set their sights on a new challenge.

AEC confirms Victorian seat of Higgins abolished

Two friends who want to job-share a role in the federal parliament are launching a new political party, as they fight to secure a Victorian senate spot.

The Herald Sun this month revealed independents Lucy Bradlow and Bronwen Bock had set their sights on the Upper House after the inner-Melbourne electorate of Higgins was abolished in a redraw of electoral boundaries.

The pair will on Friday unveil the Better Together party, which requires 1500 members to register, in a bid to increase the independent movement.

They are also preparing for a legal battle, with the Australian Electoral Commission expected to reject their candidate nomination once the election is called because there is only room for one person’s name on the form.

“We’re thinking about doing politics differently and challenging the system so that we can have a stronger Australia and a more inclusive parliament where everybody’s voices can be heard,” Ms Bock said.

“Parliament should be like any other workplace, where there are options for flexible work and job sharing.

“This is a great opportunity to represent more Australians across the whole state of Victoria in the Senate.”

The Better Together party will support action on climate change, price gouging, cost of living, the housing crisis, and greater integrity measures in the parliament.

Ms Bradlow said they had managed to fundraise back what they spent on their defunct Higgins campaign, with the pair having informal talks with fundraising arm Climate 200.

“We are seeing that elections are becoming more and more expensive, and while we strongly support measures for transparency in electoral fundraising processes, we’re also aware that the major parties are interested in putting in place measures to prevent independent parties from fundraising in the same way that major parties can fundraise, and we think that’s really damaging to the system,” she said.
