AN “old wives’ club” that raises money for charity would be abolished under a lord mayoral candidate’s plan.

Jennifer Yang said the Lady Mayoress’ Charitable Committee — which is part of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation chaired by the lord mayor — was outdated and needed to go.

Ms Yang said the foundation should be renamed the Melbourne Charitable Foundation to reflect Town Hall’s need to focus on the people of Melbourne — “not the gratification of the lord mayor”.

She said the lady mayoress’s committee was anachronistic and an “old wives’ club” that should be abolished and its work undertaken by charity sector leaders.

“If we want women to be equal, we have to stop relegating the wives of our city to charity work,” she said.

City of Melbourne councillor Susan Riley is co-chair of the committee.

It is understood that former lady mayoress Emma Page Campbell relinquished her role in the committee with the resignation of her husband Robert Doyle as lord mayor.

Ms Yang also wants to improve the efficiency of Town Hall by posting data on councillor attendance at meetings on the council’s website and publishing a quarterly attendance report card in major newspapers.

Voting for the by-election being contested by 14 candidates closes pm Friday at 6pm.
