THE CITY’S Mayor has been honoured for his commitment to cultural diversity.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle received the Anti-Defamation Commission’s public service award for Commitment to Diversity and Tolerance last week.

The award is given to people who preserve and promote values of tolerance, respect and inclusivity.

ADC chair Dr Dvir Ambramovich said Cr Doyle deserved the accolade.

“This award pays tribute to the Lord Mayor’s inspiring public service and exceptional leadership in promoting tolerance and diversity, and in building bridges between the various communities,” he said.

“At a time of an alarming rise in bigotry and xenophobia, mayors have a key role to play in promoting respectful relationships that advance coexistence and Mr Doyle is widely respected for his tireless advocacy and commitment to combating all forms of racism.”

Cr Doyle said he was humbled to be considered for the award.

“Melbourne is one of the most diverse, welcoming and friendly cities in the world.

“We are home to people from 200 countries, we speak 260 different languages and practise 135 different faiths: but we are one Melbourne.”

“I look forward to working with their leaders in building a more tolerant and inclusive Melbourne and ensuring that our children grow up in a community without hatred.”
