Victoria’s top lifesavers have been recognised, with Portsea Surf Life Saving Club and a helicopter rescue crew member taking out top honours.
Portsea Surf Life Saving Club received Saturday night’s major award, the coveted Beaurepaire Shield, and title of 2020 Marsh Club of the Year.
Its members also won the Youth Team of the Year and Masters Team of the Year categories.
Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club’s James Green — who provided training to Mildura Life Saving Club more than 500km from the coast — was named Volunteer of the Year.
Lorne Surf Life Saving Club member Lucas Karlson was declared Westpac Youth Lifesaver of the Year for the delivery of frontline patrolling services.
He also received an inaugural innovation award for efforts to train younger members.
Life Saving Victoria president Paul James said: “In these extraordinary times, it is so important to reflect on and celebrate the achievements of all our volunteers, staff and members of the broader aquatic community.”
“It is their ongoing commitment that keeps Victoria’s many beaches, pools and waterways safe,” Mr James said.
“We’d also like to thank the Victorian Government and our award sponsors for their support of LSV’s Awards of Excellence this year.”
This year’s awards were held online due to coronavirus restrictions.
