High above the mighty MCG a team of workers is getting ready to shine a new light on Australia’s sporting capital.
Just over 35 years since lights were switched on at the MCG for the first time, electricians have begun an $11 million operation to better illuminate the iconic ground.
LED lighting will take over ageing technology housed in the giant MCG towers with massive globes around the ground to give fans at the venue and watching on TV better views, using less energy.
The upgrade will allow lights at the ground to be turned on and off instantly instead of taking 15 minutes like previously for blockbusters such as the Essendon-Collingwood Anzac Day clash.
MCC facilities general manager Peter Wearne said the new lights would enhance the MCG experience for fans and players.
“We are excited for the MCG light towers to undergo a modern makeover, while still retaining their iconic look and feel,’’ he said.
“The existing lights are the same as what was originally installed 35 years ago, so not only were they reaching the end of their lifespan but they had well and truly begun to be outshone by newer technology.’’
The MCG was first lit up on the night of December 3, 1984 and the light towers unveiled for a World Championship of Cricket match between Australia and England in 1985.
The current lamps last about 5000 hours and about 30 are replaced each year on average.
The new lights will be 50 per cent more efficient, have a longer lifespan and can be changed to suit different conditions such as when its overcast or dark.
“The upgrade will also benefit those watching MCG events from home as the lights will improve the quality and clarity of the broadcast, including the presentation of slow motion vision,’’ Mr Wearne said.
