Landslide danger warning for Surf Coast beach

Emergency authorities have warned Surf Coast residents of a possible landslide at a beach near Anglesea that poses a “significant risk to human life”.

Surf Coast residents have been warned of a potential landslide at a beach in Anglesea.

Victorian emergency authorities closed the beach below Demons Bluff on Saturday due to the “significant risk to human life” associated with potential cliff collapse.

An advice message was issued just before 2pm to the public.

“Authorities have installed signage at all beach access points advising of the closure,” the Vic Emergency advice message said.

“The community is urged to adhere to the closure and avoid the area for their safety. Stay informed. Stay away from the beach below Demons Bluff near Anglesea which has been closed for public safety due to further landslips in the area.”

The beach will be closed until further notice.

The SES said the landslide alert was a general precautionary warning because of the risk of erosion.

The SES is the control agency if there is a landslide event.

Life Saving Victoria said the beach below Demons Bluff was not a patrolled section of beach.

The weather bureau said Aireys Inlet — the nearest weather station to Anglesea — had recorded 3mm of rain since 9am.

Residents are urged to stay away from the area and to use Anglesea, Point Roadknight and Point Addis beaches as alternatives.
