Labor candidate in Aston Mary Doyle outlines her pitch to voters

Defending Medicare will be a key centrepiece of Labor candidate Mary Doyle’s pitch to win the seat of Aston off the Liberals at the April 1 by-election.
Anthony Albanese will be in the eastern suburbs seat on Saturday for Ms Doyle’s official campaign launch.
The former unionist is expected to speak about her own shock breast cancer diagnosis at the young age of 25 years.
“Under the same circumstance, if I’d been born in the US I would probably not have survived,” the mother will say.
“I would not have been able to afford an ultrasound, mammogram, and numerous other tests and operations which ultimately saved my young life. But I am here.
“That is the value of Medicare and why I will always, always fight to defend it.”
The Prime Minister will call on the voters of Aston to make history and steal the seat from the Opposition – a move that not been pulled off by a government at a by-election for more than a century.
Mr Albanese will point to his party’s achievements in its first 10 months in government.
This includes having a majority of women members, reducing the cost of medicine on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and legislating paid family and domestic violence leave.
“No government for over 100 years has won a by-election in a seat held by the Opposition,” he will say.
“But here’s the thing … Labor Governments make history. Labor Governments change lives.
“Mary Doyle knows this … And now you can help her write a new chapter in the story.”
