King Charles has made a donation to Victorian flood victims, saying his and his wife’s “heartfelt thoughts” are with all those affected.
While Buckingham Palace has requested that the donation amount not be publicly disclosed, the money will be used for essential items such as food, clothing, accommodation, furniture and fuel vouchers.
In a letter to Victorian Governor Linda Dessau, the King said that he and his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, had been following news of the “terrible floods” in recent weeks.
“Our heartfelt thoughts are with all those affected and for the losses that have been suffered,” he wrote.
“Whilst I realise that this emergency is not over, I do want to pay tribute to the extraordinary efforts of those members of the emergency services, Australian Defance Force and the thousands of community volunteers who have been involved in rescue and recovery efforts.”
“It has been particularly inspiring to see how communities have pulled together to protect homes and livestock and to support each other during this appallingly difficult period.”
The King concluded by sending “our kindest and special wishes to all Victorians as you continue to demonstrate your remarkable resilience and strength”.
The royal couple’s donation will be used by Givit, a charity that partners the Victorian Government on flood relief.
A Givit spokeswoman said that 100 per cent of the money would go to flood victims for essential items.
“We work with hundreds of grassroots organisations who indicate to us what people need,” she said.
The spokeswoman said that Givit had previously received a donation from its patron the Queen Consort after the 2020 bushfires that ravaged the state.
