A DECKHAND and passengers on a ferry have spotted two killer whales near Phillip Island.

Inter Island Ferries employee Andrew Dale said about 12 people on the top deck spotted the orcas 50m from the ferry about 1km off Phillip Island on Sunday afternoon.

Mr Dale said it was the first time he had seen killer whales in the bay.

"I've worked on the bay for about eight months," he said.

"I've seen humpback whales and dolphins but I've never seen orcas. It was quite nice to see their colouring.

"Everyone was very excited."

Mr Dale said the killer whales were probably in the bay to feed on seals.

He didn't take photos of the rare sighting, but is contacting passengers to see if anyone managed to take a snap.
