AUSTRALIA’S longest-serving federal politician, Kevin Andrews, has broken his collarbone after falling from his bike during a charity event.
The Liberal member for Menzies, first elected as a Liberal MP in 1991, sustained a small fracture after “hitting a patch of loose sand and gravel” during a 100km ride from Camden to Manly.
The 61-year-old said he was “OK” and “looking forward to getting back on the bike after Easter”.
“It was a great ride — raising some $400,000 for Soldier On,” he said.
Mr Andrews, the member for the seat of Menzies in Melbourne, had torn his Achilles last year and trained to be fit enough to take part in the eight day ride, averaging about 130km per day.
Pollie Pedal, started in 1998 by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, has raised millions for charity.
This year’s trek started in Albury before finishing at North Head in Mr Abbott’s electorate of Warringah.
