The price of arguably Australia’s favourite biscuit, the Tim Tam, has hit the tip-top price of $6 at supermarkets, sparking outrage from lovers of the chocolate-covered treat.
Both Coles and Woolworths on Monday had the original 200 gram packet version of the biscuits — as well as dark chocolate, double coated, white chocolate and chewy caramel — listed at the same high price online, while the clearly harder to offload gluten free variety was for sale at $4.50 or less. But buyer beware, because that pack is only 150 grams.
At Coles, the 175 gram Arnott’s Deluxe Cafe Latte Tim Tam will set you back a whopping $6.50, but is cheaper at Woolies, in a rare (and possibly temporary) difference between the grocery giants’ prices.
Biscuit lovers took to Reddit to express their anger, with some people saying a double pack of Tim Tams “used to only be about $4.50”.
Another person declared the sky-high bikkie price “just un-Australian”.
It comes as the supermarkets come under fire for price gouging, in a cost of living crisis.
Tim Tam Originals are Arnott’s most popular biscuit.
A poll last year revealed just how much Australians love their biscuits, both sweet and savoury — with 94 per cent of Australian households buying Arnott’s biscuits annually and 2.8 million households purchasing Tim Tams.
Rounding out the top ten favourite Australian Arnott’s biscuit choices last year were Barbecue Shapes, Chicken Crimpy Shapes, Jatz, Pizza Shapes, Salada, Mint Slice, Tim Tam Double Coat, Monte Carlo and Scotch Finger.
