The club’s acting president Matthew Collins told the Herald Sun that an investigation into the incident was still ongoing.
“We stood the coach down on the spot, we’re not even sure if he was at fault or not, but we can’t tolerate a physical altercation with the coach,” he said.
“It will be ongoing, we’re going to look closely into it.”
The acting president said a new coach had already been appointed following the incident.
“We’ve got the full support of the parents, we handled it as quickly as we could,” Mr Collins said.
The club had been shocked at the “out of character” actions of the coach.
“Up to that point, he’d been a model citizen around the club,” Mr Collins said.
Senior vice president of Melton South Football and Netball Club Clinton Newbold said in a statement to Channel 9: “The club is aware than an incident occurred at the football match yesterday and an internal investigation is underway.”
“The coach has since been moved on and the Melton South Football Club does not tolerate this behaviour and it shouldn’t happen,” the statement said.
