The family of the late AFL legend Jim Stynes has paid an emotional tribute to him in a visit to his memorial in his native Ireland.

The beloved player’s widow Sam Ludbey and daughter Matisse Stynes this month visited his headstone in Dublin, Ireland.

The pair placed sunflowers and a Melbourne Football Club beanie on his headstone marked with the message: “Jim Stynes. Dublin G.A. A & Melbourne AFL Champion. 1966 – 2012. RIP”.

His daughter described the visit as being “the most special few days”.

Sam Ludbey also wrote: “Stuff memories are made of”.

Stynes was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in 2009. Tragically, the cancer spread to his brain and he died in March 2012, aged just 45.

A state funeral was held in his honour.

His legacy lives on today with the Jim Stynes Foundation nurturing and empowering youth to be resilient in the face of adversity.

Stynes was one of the nation’s greatest AFL players, breaking the record for the most consecutive games of VFL/AFL football and was honoured with the Brownlow Medal in 1991.

Off the field, he was equally as successful, channelling his effort toward charity and philanthropy.
