NOTORIOUS killer and rapist Adrian Bayley has been stabbed in jail.

Bayley was wounded inside Barwon Prison, west of Melbourne, on Thursday.

He suffered minor injuries.

He is in jail for the murder of Jill Meagher at Brunswick in 2012, and a series of rapes.

The loathed prisoner has been held outside the mainstream jail units because of fears he would be a target for other prisoners.

Police have been called to investigate the attack.

A Corrections Victoria spokeswoman said: “A prisoner received minor injuries following an incident at Barwon Prison on Thursday afternoon.”

“The prisoner was assessed and treated at the prison, but did not require hospitalisation or any ongoing treatment.”

Bayley’s earliest release date is 2055.

One of Victoria’s worst sex offenders, Bayley raped up to two dozen women before he murdered Ms Meagher.

A series of bungles by the justice system allowed him to keep offending.

Bayley was convicted of sex attacks on five women and three under-age girls during two separate sprees in 1990 and 2000, but was not retrospectively listed on Victoria’s Sex Offenders Register when it was set up in 2004.

Bayley’s DNA was taken in 2001 after he was arrested for raping sex workers, but it was not added to the Victorian or national DNA databases because it was lost.

He was suspected of carrying out at least 16 attacks in six months during that time, stalking his prey and often taking them to laneways before trapping them in his car.

He enjoyed threatening and degrading the women during his ultra-violent rapes, and told one woman: “See, look who’s got the power. See, I can do whatever I want.’’

Police sources told the Herald Sun in 2015 that the serial rapist was thought to have been responsible for at least 10 other attacks in which the women involved refused to make official statements.

Bayley was found guilty of three other rapes after facing three separate County Court trials following Ms Meagher’s murder.

Two of the rapes occurred in the months before he followed, raped and killed Ms Meagher, while he was on appeal bail and parole.

In each of the attacks, Bayley allegedly picked the women off the street and took them to secluded laneways, brutally raping and taunting them.

The Court of Appeal later overturned one of his rape convictions, relating to an attack on an 18-year-old woman who claimed he trapped and brutalised her in 2000.
