Jacinta Allan marks two years in office after taking over from Dan Andrews

As Jacinta Allan marks two years since taking over from Daniel Andrews, Opposition Leader Brad Battin says Victorians are poorer, less safe and more neglected than before she came to office. But the Premier says she is proud of what she has achieved.

Jacinta Allan’s record as Premier has come under fire by Opposition Leader Brad Battin as she marks two years in the top job.

In a blistering statement marking the anniversary Mr Battin said Victorians were poorer, less safe and more neglected than when Ms Allan came to office.

He pointed out the state’s soaring debt, new taxes, crime crisis and resourcing issues impacting police and the health system.

Mr Battin also hit out at the state’s unemployment rate — which has been the highest in the nation for 15 of the past 17 months — and the government’s failure to address housing issues.

Ms Allan succeeded Daniel Andrews as Premier two years ago today following his abrupt exit from politics.

In that time she has negotiated a Treaty with Indigenous Victorians, launched a trial of pill testing services and signed the first contracts for the $34bn Suburban Rail Loop project.

She has introduced new anti-vilification laws, banned machetes and wound back previous easing of bail laws and made non-fatal strangulation a specific offence.

She has also made official visits to both India and China to boost trade and investment opportunities with two of the largest economies in the world.

But against that the government has failed to reverse the state’s debt trajectory, with forecasts predicting it reach $194bn by 2029.

It has prompted major concerns among global ratings agencies who have warned Victoria is facing a damaging downgrade which would increase borrowing costs.

Latest crime data released this week revealed the worst crime rate on record after it jumped 14 per cent, while domestic violence also soared to another record high.

And almost 10,500 offenders failed to adhere to their bail conditions — the highest amount in a decade.

Government insiders said the crime crisis remained the biggest threat to the prospect of securing a consecutive fourth term at next year’s state election.

When Ms Allan took over as Premier, polls showed Labor had a 37 per cent primary vote share while leading the Coalition on a two-party-preferred basis 56.5 per cent to 43.5 per cent.

Latest polling, released earlier this month, showed Labor’s vote share had dropped to 32 per cent while the two-party-preferred vote had narrowed to 52 to 48.

Government sources said they believed concerns around crime were contributing to bad polling, but that a vow to enshrine working from home as a legal right had been popular.

Ms Allan said she was proud to have delivered cost of living relief for families, the promised working from home laws and the government’s Economic Growth Strategy.

She also defended the government’s commitment to its massive infrastructure agenda, saying it was good for the economy.

“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved as Premier, but I’m not focused on anniversaries – I’m focused on outcomes,” she said.

“We know there’s more to do, and we won’t stop working to make a real difference for Victorian families.

“While Brad Battin and his Liberal Party is reckless and more focused on cuts, we’re focused on what matters most because we’re on your side.”

Mr Battin said Victorians had no reason to celebrate Ms Allan’s two years in office.

“Victoria is struggling with Labor debt, a crime crisis, corruption in the building industry, cost blowouts on its major projects and a rundown health system,” he said.

“Meanwhile, the Premier is posting on social media about her favourite meat pie.

“After nine years of Daniel Andrews, followed by two years of Jacinta Allan, it’s time for a fresh start.”
