Inside the lavish ‘Bond-style’ seduction which brought down an MP

It’s the kind of place an international man of mystery might take a prospective conquest — but Andrew Broad’s “sugar daddy” date was shaken, not stirred by his advances.

THE dazzling two-storey-high glass windows of Aqua offers an unparalleled view of Hong Kong’s famous skyline.

A combination of Japanese and Italian cuisines are served up and the sushi is, according to reviews, to die for.

Although the Haru no Sosaku platter — 18 different pieces of “innovative sushi” — will set you back about $180.

But if you think of yourself as a “sugar daddy”, a wealthy chap who likes to wine, dine and entertain young women in the hope of sexual favours or just companionship, you might try the Grande Selection, 36 pieces of 12 types of sashimi. But you won’t get much change out of $350.

It’s the kind of place an international man of mystery might take a prospective conquest — but not so much a farm boy-turned politician from the Mallee.

In fact, Andrew Broad’s ocker ways stood out like a sore thumb to his dining companion in early September, just a week or so after he’d been made “The Honourable” Andrew Broad by the Governor-General.

His intentions, in his own words, where “completely dishonourable”.

“He kept commenting on prices and how expensive they were,” Amy, who has blown the lid on her dealings with the MP, told New Idea.

“It made everything so awkward from the start. He told me he was in Hong Kong for a conference but he shouldn’t have been here at all.”

Amy had agreed to dine after speaking with the MP via text messages for more than a month.

He’d told her about his “big promotion at work” — an assistant minister’s role in the Morrison Government — and sent a picture of him shaking hands with Sir Peter Cosgrove.

“I think it’s pretty strange and risky of him to send me photos of him on the news. It appears he wanted to show off and told me he was a very important person,” she said.

Once he’d arrived in Hong Kong, for the annual trade show and conference — Asia Fruit Logistica — the pair touched base. Mr Broad is then alleged to have sent messages of a more sexual nature.

“I’ve booked a flashy room to seduce you back to,” Broad allegedly sent Amy via WhatsApp. Another message read: “I’m a country boy so I know how to fly a plane, ride a horse, and f--- my woman”.

The woman, in her 20s, understood to be an Irish national, had agreed to dine with Broad at Aqua despite, she said, making it clear she would not be intimate on dates.

“He kept saying that he was very important and that when he left he was going to have to throw away his phone,” she told New Idea.

“He referred to himself as James Bond numerous times. He was always so forward and cocky. He was so sure of himself.”

Mr Broad wasn’t backward about who he was or what he did. Despite being married to his wife, Rachel, for more than 15 years, he even tried out some of his political material.

But presumably not his social conservative views about marriage.

“He gave me his election speech as to why he should be voted in by the public and I stopped listening because he was so arrogant,” Amy said.

“He kept grabbing my hand and putting it on his leg, so I excused myself and went to the bathroom and when I came back I told him I was leaving.”

Amy said she received one text thanking her for dinner and then decided to block the MP from contacting her again.

“He led me to believe he was younger, and he wasn’t pleasant to be around.”

According to sources, the next day Amy threatened to go to the press about Mr Broad unless he paid up “thousands of dollars”. The 43-year-old former boss of the Victorian Farmers Federation reported the incident to the Australian Federal Police on November 8.

Police found no Australian laws had been broken.

It is understood New Idea came to Mr Broad with the story not long after.

Mr Broad’s behaviour has been the stuff of rumour in Canberra for the past couple of years. Senior Nationals figures had confronted him with claims that he’d “played up” on his travels in December last year — two months before his former boss Barnaby Joyce was revealed to have an affair with his former staffer and that she was expecting his baby.

Mr Broad always vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

He was the first to call for Mr Joyce’s head as leader. It incensed Mr Joyce, who was made aware of rumours about Mr Broad drinking at university bars midweek and allegedly sleazing on to young women.

As one Nationals MP said yesterday: “Karma catches up with you eventually.”
