Inside the colourful life of Geoffrey Edelsten, who has died aged 78

Perhaps known best for fashioning himself as a jetsetting playboy accompanied by youthful, busty women, Geoffrey Edelsten’s 78 years were anything but dull.

Disgraced medic Dr Geoffrey Edelsten fashioned himself as a jetsetting playboy who was catnip to youthful, busty, blonde women.

The controversial Melbourne identity, 78, died in his St Kilda Road apartment on Friday.

Edelsten married his first wife Leanne Nesbitt, in the early 1980s with their flamboyant three year marriage ending in divorce in 1988.

In 2008 he stepped out at the Crown New Year’s Eve gala with striking American personal trainer, Brynne Gordon.

Gordon, 40 years younger than him, was introduced that night as Edelsten’s fiance.

They wed in November 2009 at Crown in a celebrity-studded event rumoured to have cost $3 million with Jason Alexander, Fran Drescher and Margot Robbie in attendance.

The couple separated in 2014.

He went on to marry Gabi Grecko, an American woman 46 years his junior, in June 2015 after he proposed in the birdcage enclosure at the Melbourne Cup in 2014.

That whirlwind relationship ended in a matter of months and Grecko returned to the US that same year.

Grecko was later revealed to have worked as an escort in the US prior to meeting Edelsten.

In 2016 Edelsten surprised guests at an event in Melbourne by arriving with former Pethouse Pet turned The Block contestant, Suzi Taylor, and claimed they were an item.

Taylor got on radio the following day denying they were dating.

Also in 2016 he rolled out his next US girlfriend, Ashley Kirk.

Kirk quirky denied they were a couple.

Edelsten opened up about his fantastical life between the sheets and his determined dabbling with internet dating in his autobiography Enigma which was released in 2011.

In the book Edelsten revealed he jetted off to Israel in 1972 with two girlfriends in tow.

“The three of us flew off to Tel Aviv and settled into a suite at one of the finest hotels. We also settled into bed, the three of us, each night, and we all got along like a house on fire. In fact, I’m surprised the mattress didn’t burst into flames, such was the threesome passion,’’ he wrote.

In 1975 he claimed he romanced TV siren Abigail.

“She was an animal in bed, a ferocious lover who left me gasping,’’ he said.

He also detailed his experiences with internet dating.

“Online the world of beautiful women is your oyster,’’ he wrote.

“ … If I saw someone I liked the look of I’d contact them, find out what I could about them and, if I was satisfied they were genuine, fly them to Australia, or visit them.’’

However, he claimed he met his second wife, Brynne Gordon, through friends.

“Perhaps the rumours began because it was no secret among my close friends that some of the ladies who I paraded around town were beauties I’d met through dating sites, but that was not the case with the fabulous, voluptuous blonde who came into my life in 2008,’’ he wrote.

It is understood Brynne had not been in contact with Edelsten for two years.
