Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe is recovering after being injured in a car crash in Melbourne.
It’s understood the controversial Senator was sitting in her stationary car when she was suddenly rear-ended by another vehicle at the end of last week.
She suffered minor injuries including whiplash and bruising.
Senator Thorpe was told by her doctor to not travel following the incident.
She will be absent from parliament this week but is expected to return next week.
It comes as the former Greens member accused Senator David Van of sexual harassment, claiming she was “being followed, aggressively propositioned and inappropriately touched”.
She told The Project she was under “formal protection” after receiving death threats and abuse in recent weeks.
“I’m an outspoken person and I am a target at the same time,” Senator Thorpe said.
“There are a lot of people out there that don’t want me in that role or in this role … that don’t want me in parliament, that don’t want me alive.
“I’ve felt very unsafe over the last few weeks.”
A spokesman for Senator Thorpe said she was “all right” and “managing the pain”.
He said the incident was not targeted: “There’s nothing more to it”.
