Independent review into Maribyrnong River floods is now taking feedback from the public

A review into last year’s devastating flooding around the Maribyrnong River has begun — and the community is being asked for their views.

A review into the major flooding of suburbs around the Maribyrnong River has started and is calling for feedback from the community.

Submissions for the independent probe, commissioned by Melbourne Water, are open from today until March 17.

The agency was directed to investigate the damaging October floods along the banks of the river after homes were inundated in suburbs such as Maribyrnong and Footscray.

After the disaster, criticism was levelled at a flood wall at Flemington Racecourse, built in 2007, which protected the former flood plain while nearby areas were underwater.

The review, led by planning expert Nick Wimbush, will examine what caused or contributed to the flooding of homes, including whether the Flemington flood wall played a role.

It will also assess whether other projects and activities in the region have impacted flood levels and their duration along the river.

Members of the public will be able to participate in a series of six information sessions.

Melbourne Water Managing Director Nerina Di Lorenzo said Mr Wimbush had a strong reputation, which was vital to ensure the probe was done properly.

“An independent, open and transparent review should hear from as many voices as possible, which is why we’ve made it as simple as we can for anyone who wants to be involved to do so, particularly any impacted residents who may need a bit more time to consider their submission,” she said.

“Flood planning and management is constantly evolving, so whatever the outcome of this review, we welcome the opportunity to learn and provide the best possible services for Victorians.”

Ms Di Lorenzo said Melbourne Water had been clearing debris and making repairs every day since the river had flooded.

“We’ve visited many impacted homes and businesses and seen the effects of this recent extreme weather first-hand,” he said.

“ Our hearts and our support go out to those affected by flooding in Maribyrnong and across the state.”

The findings of the review and its recommendations are expected to be given to the state government later in 2023 and be made public after this.

Last year, the Herald Sun revealed Melbourne Water had proposed building another flood wall 200m away from Flemingon Racecourse to protect a future apartment hotspot.
