Premier Jacinta Allan has extended her congratulations to US President-elect Donald Trump, but says she’s disappointed by his election win.
“I would congratulate incoming President Donald Trump on his election result, and also make it really clear that, yes, while I’m disappointed … I want to make it clear that in congratulating him, I respect the outcome, I respect any democratic process and the outcome that comes about,” she said.
“When there’s a political contest, it comes with different views and values.
“I’ve made my values really clear to the Victorian community … but that doesn’t impact on that relationship because at the end of it, we’re all professional, we respect the outcome, respect the democratic outcome.
“Democracy is just so important, to have the process, to respect the outcome, be professional, and continue to support that really important relationship.”
Ms Allan said she had no concerns her comments would impact on relations between the US and Victoria.
The US is Victoria’s largest source of foreign direct investment valued at $3.34bn, and second largest trading partner.
Government data shows two-way merchandise trade with the US reached $17.3bn in 2022-23.
The relationship is supported by the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement and diplomatic partnerships including the Quad and AUKUS.
“We already have a really strong trade investment relationship with the United States,” Ms Allan said.
“We have a number of offices that are based in the US and we have strong trading relationships between American and US companies that are based on both sides of the ocean. So we’ll continue to have those really strong relationships.”
