A severe heatwave alert has forced festival organisers to cancel Melbourne’s iconic Moomba parade.
In a statement, Lord Mayor Sally Capp said organisers had no choice but to prioritise health and safety considering the “extreme conditions” expected on Monday.
However, she described the decision to cancel the parade, which is celebrating its 70th year, as a “difficult” one.
“Due to the severe heatwave alert, the Moomba parade will not go ahead to ensure the health and safety of performers, spectators, workers and volunteers,” Ms Capp said.
“Unlike other Moomba events where there is good access to shade, water and cooling measures, parade participants are required to spend several hours outdoors in hot, heavy costumes — putting them at greater risk.”
Melbourne is expected to reach a maximum of 38 degrees on Monday.
The Bureau of Meteorology on Friday issued a severe heatwave alert, which is expected to remain in place across Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
“Severe heatwave conditions are expected to peak across the long weekend with a prolonged run of heat,” the alert said.
The parade, which snakes along Birdwood Ave, was set to feature Moomba monarchs Emma Watkins and Pete Helliar.
In preparation for the parade, many of the 1800 participants spend hours outdoors, often in traditional dress or costume while carry large props or musical instruments.
But organisers moved to reassure festival goers that there will still be “plenty of Moomba magic to be enjoyed”.
“At this stage, the Birdman rally, Moomba carnival, Bjorn Again show and Moomba masters will proceed as planned,” a statement read.
Festival goers are being urged to check the website for the updated program.
Organisers said they will continue to monitor the forecast if they need to make more changes.
“We encourage everyone attending to plan ahead, check for updates and stay safe,” they said.
“Thank you for understanding.”
