A TEACHER who told a student he was “horny” and wanted to sleep with her has been suspended for just six months.
Yukihiro Nagashima was this week slapped with the suspension for the flurry of inappropriate messages to a teenage student at his college’s sister school in Japan.
He denied having asked the 17-year-old to send graphic images of herself, but the Victorian Institute of Institute substantiated those claims.
The teaching watchdog found the former Beaconhills College teacher “compromised and violated his professional relationship”.
“The panel found that Mr Nagashima’s conduct was neither trivial, nor of momentary effect in terms of its impact on the student,” the VIT panel said in its decision.
“It accepts the student’s evidence that she was offended by Mr Nagashima’s conduct and that he made her feel embarrassed and scared.
“It also accepts that she felt afraid of what he might do or say to her if he came to her country of residence.”
Mr Nagashima struck up a conversation with the student, who he had meet during an exchange program, by asking about local flooding in September 2015.
A translated transcript of the messages show that he asked her to host him during his next stay.
“I want to sleep with you … I feel horny,” he later said. “Send me a photo of you masturbating. Are you asleep?”
The student reported the messages to a teacher.
A teacher who questioned Mr Nagashima about the messages said he initially claimed his Facebook account had been hacked and then later said he had been drinking.
Mr Nagashima denied this at a formal hearing in May, where he said the messages were “all fantasy”.
He admitted knowing that the conversation was inappropriate, but debated the translation provided.
He argued that the word translated as “horny” was more accurately “excited” or “aroused”.
He also maintained that his account may have been hacked.
Mr Nagashima was found guilty of serious misconduct.
His registration was suspended until February and he must complete at least four sessions with a psychologist.
He must also write a report about his inappropriate conduct and how he will prevent repeating it.
