The Victorian Poisons Information Centre is dealing with more than 20 cases each year of poisoning from e-cigarette liquids, which may or may not contain nicotine that can cause serious illness or death if ingested.
“We know there have been cases of children becoming severely unwell or dying after swallowing liquid from an e-cigarette and the Commonwealth must act quickly to keep our kids safe,” Ms Mikakos said.
The Victorian coroner is investigating the infant’s recent death, which prompted Quit Victoria to call for a crackdown to prevent further tragedies.
The government is also concerned about reports of faulty parts in e-cigarettes causing explosions.
Ms Mikakos urged e-cigarette users to be vigilant in making sure their “e-cigarette and liquids are out of reach and out of sight from children”.
