HAVING a ‘ruff’ day? A puppy pick-me up could be just what the doctor ordered to relieve workplace stress.

Research has shown that having your four-legged friends around the workplace can help lower blood pressure as well as stress levels.

The human-animal bond has also shown to improve the quality of life and benefits mental, physical and emotional health.

REA group Melbourne executive general manager Barb Hyman said she decided on the trial after seeing its success at another company.

“Dogs bring love into the workplace and creates a natural working environment,” Ms Hyman said.

“They not only minimises stress if you’re having a tough day but it’s a great way to bond with other colleagues.”

Ms Hyman said the idea also helped to obliterate hierarchy.

“From the CEO to someone in a junior position, having your dog with you is a great way to bond and gets rid of position hierarchy,” she said.

The trial at REA Melbourne begins next week and will run until the end of the year but Ms Hyman said if staff take to the idea the dogs at work program will become permanent.
