Harvey Weinstein allegations: Who is he and what did he do?

HOLLYWOOD is wading through an avalanche of allegations accusing movie mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. Here’s what you need to know about it.

HOLLYWOOD has been rocked by the mounting allegations of sexual misconduct from film tycoon Harvey Weinstein.

These revelations are an insight into the powerplays, harassment and bullying that lurks beneath the surface of Hollywood.

But what exactly has he done? Here’s all the information you need to catch up.

WHO IS HARVEY WEINSTEIN?

Ever seen The King’s Speech? How about Pulp Fiction? US film producer Harvey Weinstein brought many classic films to the silver screen as co-founder of both Miramax (1979) and The Weinstein Company (2005).

By funding hit films, TV shows and stage productions, these American companies helped shape pop culture as we know it.

With plenty of money and power, Weinstein had a lot of influence in the top shelf of society. His public profile has been, for the most part, squeaky clean, up until these damaging revelations.

Weinstein is a prolific donor to the Democratic Party, giving around US$1.4 million to since 1992. He also campaigned against poverty and AIDS, helped fund research on multiple sclerosis and diabetes, and hypocritically championed women’s rights.

WHAT DID HARVEY WEINSTEIN DO?

The New York Times recently published an explosive investigation that revealed Harvey Weinstein had been sexually harassing young actors for decades, and settled many cases.

His predatory behaviour included inviting women up to his hotel room and asking them to watch him bathe naked, and to give him massages.

The initial report focused on two Hollywood actors who went on the record accusing the Hollywood producer: Ashley Judd (De-Lovely, Kiss the Girls) and Rose McGowan (Charmed, Death Proof).

Since then, 30 more women (and counting) have shared their own experiences of sexual misconduct at the hands of the mogul, including two rape allegations.

These women include Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cara Delevingne, Kate Beckinsale and Heather Graham.

A tape from a 2015 sting operation has also been leaked, where Harvey Weinstein admits to having groped an Italian model. But police had dismissed the case.

Since the investigation, Harvey Weinstein has been fired by the board of The Weinstein Company, and condemned by politicians and Hollywood elites alike, including Hillary Clinton and Meryl Streep.

It begs the question of why his predatory behaviour was kept under the radar for so long.

IS HARVEY WEINSTEIN MARRIED?

Since the New York Times article and the accusations that have emerged following its publication, Harvey Weinstein’s wife Georgina Chapman publicly announced she’s leaving him.

“My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions,” Chapman said in a statement to People magazine.

“I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time.”

Chapman, 41, is a British fashion designer behind the luxury label Marchesa.

According to Time Magazine, Weinstein’s net worth is estimated to be between US$240 million and $300 million.
