A GREYHOUND trainer who was caught on camera punching a dog in the face has avoided suspension from the sport.

But Greyhound Racing Victoria stewards are appealing against the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board’s decision to let Bradley Keel continue training dogs after the shocking act of cruelty.

Keel was found guilty of two charges of striking a greyhound with “excessive or brutal force” but was handed a suspended 18-month disqualification from the sport.

GRV chief executive Alan Clayton said he was disappointed with the decision.

“There is no place for animal cruelty in greyhound racing and the community, and indeed the industry, expects more of its participants,” Mr Clayton said.

Greyhound trainer Bradley Keel has avoided an immediate suspension for punching a dog.

“Although the length of the disqualification appears significant, the fact it has been wholly suspended allows Mr Keel to be able to immediately continue participating in the industry despite the finding of guilt for striking a greyhound.

“There is no reason to strike a greyhound with a fist under any circumstances and this behaviour must be appropriately penalised and eradicated.””

The Herald Sun revealed the video of Keel striking the greyhound in September.

It was filmed at the Tooradin Trial Track last year before it was shut down because live bait was being used in training.

The RSPCA also launched an investigation into what inspectorate manager Allie Jalbert described as “absolutely disgusting” behaviour.
