The move, a $100 million promise for project planning, will increase pressure on the Labor government for increa­sed public transport spending in the countdown to the state election on November 24.

The Greens Plan to build Melbourne Metro 2

The cross-city rail project has been discussed for about a decade to complement the present $1 billion Metro project which is creating five new stations and twin 9km tunnels between South Yarra and South Kensington.

The Greens plan involves an interchange at Parkville station, which is being built for Metro 1, and two new stations at Fishermans Bend.

Greens transport spokesman Sam Hibbins said Melbourne Metro 2 was an alternative to the obsession with toll roads and aimed to reduce congestion and protect Melbourne’s liveability.

“No party can have any credibility on public transport unless they commit to planning for Melbourne Metro 2 now.

“Melbourne Metro 2 will increase services, cut overcrowding and deliver a reliable, high capacity metro system for commuters from the outer suburbs to the inner city.”
