From baking heat to wintry weather, Melbourne brings four seasons in one month

VICTORIA’S COLDEST PLACES

Forecasters had been predicting a possible dusting of snow overnight for the alpine ranges.

Mt Hotham dropped to a chilly -3C at 6am and Mt Buller was -1.9C just after 3am.

Meanwhile, snow has been recorded at Mt Baw Baw — which got down to 1.8C shortly before 12.30am.

The wintry conditions are a far cry from the record-breaking temperatures which baked Victoria just weeks ago, with the beginning of 2019 officially the state’s warmest ever January.

But Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Matthew Michael said the cool conditions weren’t unusual for this time of year.

The CBD was sitting at 11.8C just after 7am while Coldstream, in Melbourne’s outer northeast, dropped to 5.1C shortly after 12.30am.

The last time Melbourne had a morning this cold was on December 23, which dipped to 11.5C.

The city is forecast to reach 19C today, Mt Baw Baw 8C, and Mt Buller and Mt Hotham 7C.

Thursday is expected to bring warmer weather, with a forecast top of 23C in Melbourne.
