Former Labor Minister Philip Dalidakis has quit a senior role at Australia Post just seven months after he shocked the Andrews Government by leaving politics to take the job.

Staff were told on Monday that Mr Dalidakis would vacate his role as executive general manager of corporate services.

It is not yet known why the former member of Cabinet decided to move on, but an Australia Post spokeswoman confirming he had already stopped working for the corporation.

Mr Dalidakis surprised Victorian Labor in June last year when he announced he was leaving state parliament despite being re-elected in 2018.

The decision left a vacancy in the upper house right before a vote on controversial fire service reforms.

The announcement was made at a company-wide meeting while Australia Post released its half-yearly results.

The figures showed revenue from letters was down, with losses of $87 million, while profits from parcels and services increased by 12 per cent to $193 million.

Australia Post chief executive and managing director Christine Holgate said the costs of the letter business had continued to rise.

“The 10 cent letter increase in January will support our letters business going forward, but after four years of no increases, it alone will not fully compensate for the losses,” she said.

“In order to ensure we are able to continue to provide these community services and remain sustainable, the time has come we must transform our delivery network.”
