Melbourne must be made ‘liveable again’: Victorian Shadow Housing Minister

The former VicRoads Headquarters will be transformed into hundreds of houses after the Allan government rezoned the existing building on the Kew site.

The Herald Sun can reveal the land was rezoned for residential and commercial use to deliver about 500 homes.

The government is investigating repurposing the unused mid-century office building on the southern end of the site with early works expected to commence next year.

It will create more homes, with a minimum 10 per cent affordable housing component, close to schools, shops, jobs and tram stops.

The site is bordered by Wellington and Denmark streets as well as Xavier College’s tennis courts, cricket oval and athletics track.

It is understood the government is probing partnerships with the private sector to deliver the remaining residential or mixed-use development.

Meanwhile, more surplus land will be unlocked on Belmont West Rd in Croydon South, Grattan St in Carlton, Waterdale Rd in Heidelberg West, Lavender Lane in Baxter, McLaren St in Bendigo and Maurice St in Geelong.

These six sites have the potential to deliver up to 350 homes.

Housing and Building minister Harriet Shing said the Kew building will provide people with the homes that they need.

“Unlocking surplus government land is one of many ways we are increasing housing supply, because more young people should be able to live closer to where they grew up, and more workers deserve the opportunity of a home that’s closer to their job,” she said.

“This iconic office building at the heart of the new train and tram zone in Kew Junction can now be put to really good use — giving more people in the inner east the homes that they need.”
