Forget the humble pie — some of Melbourne’s top restaurants serve up an ace for Aus Open foodies

FOODIES have made the most of the gourmet offerings at this year’s Australian Open. But drink prices are still off-putting for some.

Hunger games

THE Australian Open has become a grand slam for Aussie chefs keen to showcase Victoria’s best produce.

Rockpool Bar and Grill, Nobu and Laneway are numbered among the pop up restaurants offering unique fare this year.

Organisers say tennis fans have more options than ever before — but some punters have warned it’s an open slather for overpriced food as families battle to keep it affordable.

But it didn’t stop foodies from making the most of the gourmet fare yesterday.

Celebrity chef Neil Perry said the Rockpool pop up was a welcomed challenge.

Victorian seafood and vegetables and grass fed Tassie beef are among the menu options.

“Essentially, what we are doing is making it an Australian celebration,’’ Perry said.

“This is an absolute challenge but we are delighted to be a part of it.’’

Laneway Club, 88 Melbourne and Glasshouse will be back again on site this year as organiser attempt to lift the bar.

Tennis punters Evan Norbury and Emily Elkington said while most food prices were reasonable, the cost of drinks was a stretch.

“I think the beer prices are a bit over the top,’’ Mr Norbury said.

“Especially if it’s later in the night and you want to enjoy a few drinks. It adds up pretty quickly.’’

Zac Ansell, of Torquay, was among a group of friends who brought their own food.

“We didn’t want to pay an arm and a leg,’’ he said.
