SAM Newman has pulled out of the race to become lord mayor of Melbourne because of work commitments.
A spokesman for the former footballer and Footy Show host said he was forced to abandon his Town Hall tilt to cover the US Masters for Channel 9 in April.
The tournament runs from April 5-8 which coincides with nominations for the lord mayor by-election, scheduled for May 11 following the resignation of Robert Doyle.
Election rules state candidates must be physically present to nominate.

Mr Newman was described as “shocked and disappointed” by the outcome.
“He had filled out all his forms, he was ready to go,” the spokesman said.
Mr Newman only discovered he was to cover the tournament, held in Augusta, on Wednesday.
The Herald Sun revealed Mr Newman’s bid for the mayoralty on March 2.
His election platform is understood to have included more support for homeless services, a review of speed limits and more oversight of planning particularly in the Docklands precinct.
The spokesman said Mr Newman would keep his options open for the future.
“He’s not ruling out the idea (of a future run) — it’s safe to say he’s interested in doing what he can to improve Melbourne.”
The position of lord mayor is vacant following Mr Doyle’s resignation amid sexual harassment allegations on February 4.
Property Council executive Sally Capp is believed to be the frontrunner in the race for the top job.
Nominations for the by-election close on April 10.
