Three Hawks fans were filmed brawling with another footy fan in the stands at Friday night’s huge MCG blockbuster in which 10 people were booted for poor behaviour.
Vision of the post-game blue shows a trio of Hawthorn fans punching and kicking a man in the stairwell behind the brown and gold cheer squad after their crushing loss to Collingwood.
The plain-clothed man, who endured at least two kicks to his upper body and a handful of jumper punches, returned serve with his own punch directed at one of the Hawks fans.
A Coca Cola bottle was tossed at him as he attempted to free himself from one of the men’s grips, who had been holding him in place by the hood of his jumper.
He was also struck with a Hawthorn flag.
He managed to break free before MCG security staff rushed to disrupt the ugly and embarrassing skirmish between a bunch of grown, middle-aged men.
Vision of the fight had been viewed online by more than 200,000 people early on Saturday afternoon.
Victoria Police were made aware of the skirmish after the 32-year-old claimed he’d been assaulted.
He was unwilling to make a statement to police at the ground.
“Officers are aware of a fight which broke out following an altercation between a small group about 10.30pm,” police said in a statement.
“A 32-year-old man advised police that he was assaulted but did not wish to make a statement at that time. The man was not injured during the incident.”
Details of why the group of men became involved in the fight are largely unknown.
Of the 83,000 Magpies and Hawks fans packed into the MCG on Friday night, police say 10 unruly spectators were evicted throughout the night.
“Police were generally pleased with the crowd behaviour at the MCG for Friday night’s AFL match,” the statement continued.
“There were a small number of behavioural issues with ten people evicted from the stadium by police.”
Police have also warned they will be out in force for Saturday night’s massive A-League Grand Final at AAMI Park.
Hundreds of officers will patrol the stadium precinct and along Swan St before, during and after the mammoth clash between Melbourne Victory and City.
