Footscray factory fire prompts smoke warning, closes part of Ballarat Rd

Parts of Ballarat Rd in Footscray remain closed after a factory fire blanketed suburbs in Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs in smoke.

A factory fire has blanketed suburbs in Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs in smoke.

Emergency services were called to a factory fire on Ballarat Rd in Footscray around 7:45pm Wednesday with the property fully engulfed in flame upon their arrival.

Part of the roof collapsed as firefighters fought to bring the fire under control around 8:15pm.

Residents in Ascot Vale, Flemington, Footscray and Maribyrnong were advised to stay indoors on Wednesday night because of smoke.

Ballarat Rd remained closed between Gordon St and Farnsworth Ave at 7am Thursday.

Motorists were advised to use Gordon St and Geelong Rd.

Firefighters remained at the scene at 7am Thursday morning as they worked to make the site safe.

Fire investigators will attend the site on Thursday to determine the cause of the blaze.

Nobody was injured in the blaze.
