MELBOURNE’S iconic Flinders St Station is set for a facelift and will be repainted in its original colours.

The heritage revamp will restore the building to its original 1910 style and will be finished in 2017.

Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said it “will bring new life” to the area.

“Flinders Street Station will be returned to its original colours, to reflect and celebrate the history of this iconic a Melbourne landmark,” she said.

The job will include sourcing 5000 litres of specially manufactured paints and is part of a $100m investment into the station buildings precinct which is continuing in the next 18 months.

Ms Allan said the business case for an update of the station including the ballroom was still “a year or so off” but repair and heritage works were being done in the mean time.

The mustard colour, familiar to most modern day Melburnians, will become a lighter, stone colour, while the maroon sections and green trimmings will be darkened.

Flinders St has been repainted five times since the early 1900s.
