Evacuated staff at an air control tower have been allowed back into the building at Melbourne Airport after a brief suspension of flights.

They also thanked passengers for their patience as flight delays are expected to continue.
Flights were suspended after reports a fire alarm went off in a control tower forcing an evacuation.
There were currently limited departures from the airport and flights were suspended for around half an hour.

Melbourne Airport itself was not evacuated and staff from the control tower returned to their offices shortly after the initial evacuation.
The airport spokesperson said there would be some delays but said passengers should continue to make their way to the airport as normal.
It is not yet clear what triggered the alarm.
