Flemington Racecourse set to transform into New Year’s Eve party zone

Flemington Racecourse will be transformed into a party zone as a New Year’s Eve meeting is staged at the home of the Melbourne Cup for the first time. Check out what’s planned.

Flemington Racecourse will be transformed into a party zone with light shows, karaoke booths and pop up bars as a New Year’s Eve meeting is staged at the home of the Melbourne Cup for the first time.

An evening of twilight racing will provide the entree to celebrations well after the final race, with the precinct to come to life after dark with a NYE party and activities for all ages.

Flemington’s famous front lawn will provide the canvas for a special “Illuminate Flemington” multi-sensory light experience with dazzling displays and a main stage headlined by DJs from 4pm.

A dedicated family zone will offer entertainment until 9.30pm including dodge ball, kids disco, karaoke, face painting with UV paint, pony rides, sporting activities and roving entertainment.

Punters will get a front-row seat to fireworks at Footscray Park at 9.30pm and the midnight CBD display, with the racecourse offering a prime view of the city.

And racing fans will enjoy an eight race twilight card from 3.40pm.

The NYE races mark a shift from the traditional New Year’s Day program at Flemington. Victoria racing Club chief executive Kylie Rogers said it would be a game changer.

“We are really excited to throw one of the best New Year’s Eve parties in Melbourne and we have created multiple spaces across the precinct to offer unique and elevated experiences,” Ms Rogers said.

“People are encouraged to come for the racing and stay for the celebrations or simply join us for the New Year’s festivities.

“There’s something for everyone.’’

The event is also likely to provide a much-needed boost to the VRC’s finances.

The club recently announced a $12m profit before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of assets for the 2024/25 financial year but a $7.2m net loss for the same period.

The VRC still owes about $57.5m but hopes to wipe off $10m of that debt this financial year.

Ms Rogers said Flemington would be a “one-stop” celebration point, combining world-class racing, dining experiences, live entertainment and breathtaking views of the fireworks.

“This is a proud community event designed for locals to enjoy, with family-friendly entertainment, live music, and spectacular fireworks views right in their own backyard,’’ she said.

“It’s going to be an unforgettable way to welcome 2026 at Flemington.”

Gates will open at 3pm and close at 1am.

A general admission adult ticket will cost $30, with kids under 12 free.

Trains will run between the city and the track.
