NEIGHBOURS were forced to evacuate their homes after a Mordialloc property was gutted by a blaze started from an unattended barbecue.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Country Fire Authority firefighters were called to Manning Close, Mordialloc about 3.17pm on Tuesday and discovered the roof and rear of the double-storey home fully alight.
While they worked to contain the blaze a neighbouring home came under threat, but firefighters were able to protect it while confirming there was no one inside the burning property.

An MFB spokesman said fire and smoke from the burning building forced them to evacuate neighbouring homes.
“A Community Advice was issued for heavy smoke in the area and this remained in place for two hours,” he said.
“The fire took one hour to bring under control.
The cause of the fire was an unattended barbecue left on, and located on the decking at the rear of the property.”
All residents have been allowed to return back to their homes.
The fire caused significant damaged to the property, including structural damage to the back of the property and the roof space.
