A sewage leak at a block of public housing units in North Melbourne has been dubbed by emergency workers as a ‘poo-nami’ after they were called in to fix the “yucky” problem.

Firefighters were called to a sewage leak which has been dubbed as a ‘poo-nami’ in Melbourne’s inner suburbs this morning.
The MFB were called to the housing commission in Alfred St North Melbourne around 8.50am this morning to reports of a sewage problem.
MFB spokesman Paul Watson said it was a “yucky job”.
“The incident involved an apartment which had a sewage problem,” he said.
“Water came out of a drain in a bathroom along with sewage somehow.
“It ended up going downstairs into an adult learning centre which we had to force entry into.
“It was a yucky job.”

The job required 18 firefighters including members of the hazmat crew to assist with decontamination efforts.

The SES, Victoria Police and local council also were on scene.
Emergency workers stopped the flow of water using industrial-strength dry vacuums to remove the waste.
It is understood this is not the first time the building has had sewage issues.
The leak has destroyed the adult learning centre and the Department of Health and Human Services will repair the damage.
