Firebug lit blazes that destroyed farmland, police say

The hunt is on for a firebug who is suspected of lighting several fires that destroyed farmland and a shed in central Victoria on Friday.

A firebug is suspected of lighting a chain of 10 blazes across central Victoria on Friday.

A hay shed was destroyed and a large area of farmland burnt by the fires which are under investigation by detectives from Bendigo CIU.

Two blazes broke out at about 3.30pm in the Avonmore area in the vicinity of Lanmore Rd and Elmore-Barnadown Rd.

One of them destroyed the hayshed.

After 10.30pm, emergency services were called to a succession of other outbreaks.

Three were on the Midland Highway and another three on the Northern Highway between Carag Carag and Toolleen.

Another fire started at 11.40pm in Axedale and another started at 1.10am today in bush off Read Lane at Kangaroo Flat.

Investigators are keen to speak with anyone in the area who witnessed the fires or vehicles in the vicinity when they started.
