A fire has forced a restaurant in Melbourne’s inner north owned by a Melbourne celebrity couple to close its doors “until further notice”.

Emergency services were called to Ascot Food and Wine, a venue owned by ex-AFL footballer Shaun Hampson and supermodel Megan Gale, about 4.50pm on Tuesday afternoon.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman said a fire in the roof of the restaurant had caused a major smoke log.

Firefighters managed to put out the fire before ventilating the building.

In a post on Instagram, Hampson shared that the damage caused by the blaze would mean the restaurant would be closed indefinitely.

“It is with heavy hearts we wish to inform everyone that we will be closed until further notice,” the post read.

“Everyone is safe and a big shoutout to the people that came to our aid x.

“After a serious fire, @ascotfoodandwine will unfortunately be closed until further notice.”

It comes just months after the eatery was targeted in a brazen burglary where thieves made off with about $15,000 worth of liquor and $4000 in cash – even stealing the tip jar.

The venue has been operating in Moonee Ponds since it opened in 2014 as a cafe.
