Fire destroys rural primary school on first day of school

Students at Cowwarr Primary School returned to school yesterday, but only hours later the small rural school burnt to the ground.

A primary school in Gippsland has burnt to the ground overnight.

The CFA were called to Cowwarr Primary School, 27km northeast of Traralgon, about 9.30pm last night following reports it was ablaze.

80 firefighters attended the scene and the inferno took an hour to bring under control.

The main building, library and amenities have all destroyed by flames.

It comes as students returned to school this week.

The Department of Education has been contacted for comment.
