Black smoke billowed across Melbourne this evening, after a fire broke out in the beer garden of a popular bar in the city’s north.

North Melbourne bar fire

Black smoke is billowing across Melbourne’s CBD after a fire erupted at a Victoria St restaurant.

The fire broke out about 5pm on Friday evening, and it is believed the location of the fire is Prudence Bar in North Melbourne.

MFB spokesman Andrew Stephenson said firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to the main building.

“The fire was in a timber construction in the beer garden of the property,” he said.

“All patrons and staff at the venue evacuated to safety.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.”

Nine MFB appliances including an aerial unit were used to battle the blaze, which was brought under control at 5.30pm.

Jeremy Daalder told the Herald Sun he had heard an explosion.

“There was a huge boom that rattled our windows...it caused a few expletives to be used.”

Mr Daalder said his office was about 50 metres away and everyone on the street could hear the crackling of the flames.

“It’s under control now but the beer garden will be gone.”

Paramedics and Victoria Police attended the scene, and no injuries have been reported.

Footage taken from the scene shows black smoke erupting from the top floor of a two-storey building.

Flames were visible emanating from the roof of the building.

More to come.
