Fewer trucks to use Millers Rd under West Gate Tunnel plan

THE State Government says it is listening to locals in the inner west after committing to reduce the number of trucks on Millers Rd when the West Gate Tunnel project is complete.

The $5.5 billion West Gate Tunnel will run from the freeway to Yarraville

THE number of trucks using Millers Rd when the West Gate Tunnel is complete is expected to be significantly reduced after the State Government moved to adjust the tolling structure.

Traffic modelling shows around 3000 fewer trucks will use Millers Rd in 2031 if proposed truck tolling points are changed on the upgraded West Gate Freeway.

The environmental effects statement pointed to two new toll points on the West Gate Freeway either side of Millers Rd and one more at Hyde Rd.

As part of the contract, toll road operator Transurban will now be required to include two truck toll points instead of three.

The proposed Grieve Parade to Millers Rd truck point will be abandoned, removing the incentive for trucks to rat-run to avoid the first toll point.

Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said the Government has also committed to working with Millers Rd residents on noise reduction measures to make their homes quieter.

Likely improvements could include options like double glazing, insulation, fencing and airconditioning.

The work would be done in consultation with owners of properties that front Millers Rd between the West Gate Freeway and Geelong Rd.

“Melbourne needs the West Gate Tunnel to keep the city moving. With no alternative, when the West Gate stops, Melbourne stops,” he said.

“The West Gate Tunnel will take more than 9000 trucks off residential streets in the inner west, moving them onto arterial roads and a new, dedicated route to the port.”

When finished, the West Gate Tunnel Project will provide a time saving of 20 minutes and provide a much needed alternative to the West Gate Bridge with twin tunnels under Yarraville.

An extra 37,000 vehicles are expected to hit the West Gate Freeway each day by 2031, but 28,000 should avoid the West Gate Bridge by using the tunnel.

The toll rates are still subject to negotiation between Transurban — which is funding most of the project in return for tolling revenue — and the Andrews Government.

The environmental effects and benefits of the project are currently being considered by an independent Inquiry and Advisory Committee appointed by the Minister for Planning.
