Salvation Army stalwart Major Brendan Nottle has enjoyed a big week of fundraising for homelessness services.
On Monday night, he attended a gala dinner organised by underworld figure Mick Gatto which raised up to $1 million for the Salvos’ Project 614.
But today it was all about biscuits, with bakery chain Ferguson Plarre resuming its production of so-called Gingerbread Nottles.
Last year, sales of the biscuits raised $30,000 for the Project 614 Night Cafe in Bourke St after the idea was cheekily hatched by Deputy Lord Mayor Arron Wood and 3AW’s Neil Mitchell.
About 20,000 Gingerbread Nottles were sold, with the campaign supported by prominent Victorians, including Premier Daniel Andrews.
“I was sent a few disturbing videos of so called friends taking way too much pleasure in
chopping my likeness in half,” Maj Nottle said at the launch yesterday.
Cr Wood said: “Brendan and his team at Project 614 do an incredible job looking after our homeless and vulnerable 24 hours a day, seven days a week — the Gingerbread Nottle cause could not be more worthy.”
“The lead up to Christmas is a particularly difficult time for people doing it tough, estranged from their families, dealing with mental health issues, addiction and poverty, but the Salvos make sure no one is left behind.”

Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses CEO Steve Plarre said the biscuit had a makeover this year featuring rainbow-coloured hair, “so you can pick your favourite coloured Gingerbread Nottle as well”.
“The Gingerbread Nottles are all lovingly handmade by our pastry chefs in our Keilor Park headquarters using our traditional recipe,” he said.
The $4.50 biscuits are sold at Ferguson Plarre stores or at fergusonplarre.com.au
