Two inmates in a Melbourne youth jail held a female prison guard captive while holding a shiv to her throat.
The Herald Sun has been told the pair put the knife up to the guard’s throat while holding her down after they refused orders to return to their rooms.
The violent assault is believed to have unfolded on Friday inside the Westgate unit of the Melbourne Youth Justice Centre in Parkville about 5pm.
The incident comes after a spate of violent attacks inside Victoria’s newest youth jail.
In a similar attack in July, inmates detained over an alleged murder held a makeshift knife up to the throat of a staff member and stole their access cards at the Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre west of Werribee.
Two inmates also stabbed and beat another detainee in the jail late last month.
Soon after, two other detainees assaulted a staff member before swiping his keys and using them to get into a separate unit of the jail to attack another prisoner.
That staff member was hospitalised.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said staff quickly resolved the incident and the guard was not injured.
“A youth justice staff member was assessed by onsite medical services and had no physical injuries,” she said.
“They are being provided extra support following the incident.
“We take a zero-tolerance approach to violence. The matter has been referred to Victoria Police.”
