Residents fear a major landslip and loss of trees on the Yarra River bank near a residential development on the old Amcor paper mill site at Alphington.
Two large gum trees have already toppled into the river with others vulnerable.
The riverbank has been roped off while Yarra City Council and developer Glenvill wait for land management, hydrology and arborist reports.
Yarra councillor Bridgid O’Brien said the cause had to be identified and called on Glenvill to protect the site. “These trees provide important nesting sites for wildlife that cannot be readily found elsewhere,’’ Cr O’Brien said.
Yarra Riverkeeper Association Andrew Kelly said he was concerned developments were being built too close to the water and environmental impacts were an afterthought.
“These developments expose trees and the likelihood is that trees are falling into the river,’’ Mr Kelly said.
Work to regenerate the old paper mill site into a 2500-home YarraBend development is about 10 per cent complete and the homes with river frontages are yet to be built.
A Glenvill spokesperson said the company was conducting “immediate and proactive works to mitigate the risk of further damage” to the river bank.
“Investigations into the cause are ongoing.’’
“Glenvill remains committed to preserving the local flora and fauna of the Yarra River and
acknowledges the importance of balancing conservation with the safety of the local community.’’
STORM OVER PLAN FOR SCHOOL IN SHOPPING CENTRE
Some residents believe water flows and seepage have changed since the development began.
Resident Todd Perry said the integrity of the riverbank was in question.
“There doesn’t seem to be any sense of urgency to rectify the problem.’’ Mr Perry said.
A community meeting to discuss residents’ concerns is being held at the Alphington Bowls Club this Thursday from 7.30pm.
